Activated Carbon Classifications

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)

Granular activated carbon has a relatively larger particle size compared to powdered activated carbon. Granulated carbons are mainly used for water treatment and air/gas treatment. GAC can be either in the granular form or extruded. GAC is designated by sizes such as 8×20, 20×40, or 8×30 for liquid phase applications and 4×6, 4×8 for vapor phase applications. AWWA (1992) B604 uses the 50-mesh sieve (0.297 mm) as the minimum GAC size.

Acid-washed Carbon

Acid washed carbon is an activated carbon with low acid soluble iron content. This process involves treating the activated carbon with a strong acid, such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, which reacts with and dissolves any impurities that may be present on the surface of the carbon. This results in an activated carbon that can be used with low pH liquids or when a low metal/ash leachable activated carbon.

Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC)

PAC materials are finer materials, specifically powders or fine granules less than 1.0 mm in size with an average diameter between .15 and .25 mm. AC is made up of crushed or ground carbon particles, 95-100% of which will pass through a designated mesh sieve or sieve. ASTM classifies particle sizes corresponding to an 80-mesh sieve (0.177 mm) and smaller as PAC. PAC presents a large surface to volume ratio with a small diffusion distance, which allows it to be effective in applications such as wastewater treatment and decolorization of beverages.

Pelletized Carbon

Pelletized activated carbon consists mainly of mixed pulverized anthracite or coal with a suitable binder which is then extruded at high pressure into a cylindrical shaped form. Pelletized carbons can be used for air or gas treatment applications.

Impregnated Carbon

We supply several different impregnated activated carbons for difference applications, including antimicrobial/antiseptic needs. Our impregnated activated carbons can be utilized for water purification and the adsorption of H2S.

Food-grade Carbon

The majority of our food-grade activated carbon products are manufactured from wood, therefore the product is low in metals and iron. In addition to traditional food and beverage applications, it can also be used in medical applications.

Catalytic Carbon

Catalytic carbon is a class of activated carbon used to remove chloramines and hydrogen sulfide during drinking water purification. It has the adsorptive characteristics of conventional activated carbons, as well as the ability to promote chemical reactions.
